A few years ago, I attended a children's ministry conference and listened to a keynote speaker discuss how sometimes ministry is messy. He went on to describe a particular messy situation that he found himself in ... a situation that he would rather not be in ... but God had other plans and through it all and through God, he was able to minister through the messiness of the situation. I don't recall anything else he said (though I am sure he was very good) but that situation and his words have stuck with me throughout the years. This week has been messy (and it's only Tuesday) -- some weeks are like that I guess, even in ministry. Sometimes in the midst of the mess, however, you just have to throw on your walking shoes, strap up the dog, and experience life. Sometimes you have to stop and sniff at sticks and chase leaves. Sometimes you have to greet your friends on the other side of the fence (even if they are scary little chihuahuas) with a bark and a bounce. Sometimes you have to ... SQUIRREL ... well, you get the point. Sometimes the best therapy is spending time with the dog. (Guess what dog spells backwards? Exactly.) Life is messy. Clean it up. But don't forget in the midst of the mess, life is happening. You just have to look beyond the mess in order to see the life. |
